How do I remove red wine stains from clothing?

The infamous red wine question. Well here is a link to some extremely helpful tips on how to remove red wine stains.

Do I blot or scrub stains out?

Please, never rub clothing stains. Blot the stained area with cold water or club soda. This may help remove some of the staining substance while avoiding damage to the fabric.

Can all stains be reomved by professionals?

We would of course love to say yes to the question but the fact is no, not all stains can be removed no matter how good your cleaning service is.

Whether it’s a new garment or a treasured, well-worn garment, everyone hates it when they spill something on their clothing. We understand, and will always use our best efforts to make that accident go away. Sometimes it’s pretty easy – sometimes not. Either way, we have the professional expertise to do the job. Successful stain removal depends largely on the nature of the stain, the type of fabric, and the colorfastness of the dye. Some fabrics and dyes simply will not withstand the use of cleaning or stain removal agents. Some stains, like ink and dried paint for example, can be impossible to remove.

I followed the care label on the garment, but my clothes still got ruined.

Care labels aren’t always correct. Most manufacturers never test garments before the required care label is attached.

Understanding and following care label instructions is almost an art – requiring a combination of knowledge of care symbols, instructions, and practical experience. The Federal Trade Commission’s (FTC) Care Label Rule does not require testing before care instructions are assigned to a garment – only that a manufacturer have a ‘reasonable basis’ for their care instructions

What can I do to prevent stains from setting in?

Treat the garment right away or bring the stained garment in as soon as possible. Don’t let the stain sit for too long.

Stains and soil left too long can be impossible to remove. Studies by the Dry Cleaning & Laundry Institute show that after aging for only one week, 20% of stains cannot be removed satisfactorily. After three weeks, this increases to 47%. If staining occurs, bring it to us as soon as possible.

Should I use heat to help remove stains?

No, absolutely not. Heat is an evil stain setting monster that most people make the mistake of unleashing.

Why is it that I brought my clothes to a professional but my stains weren’t removed?

At Harbour Cleaners we do our very best to spot stains on customer garments. However, it is very helpful when you the customer points out specific stains you would like removed. Please point out spills such as those from white wine, fruit juices, or soft drinks, or other stains that may not be visible, when you bring in your cleaning. These invisible stains require special attention by us in order to prevent them from permanently discoloring your item.

My family is very active, how can I prevent stains from perspiration?

Perspiration can cause dyes in fabrics to change color so, if possible, protect your garments from excessive contact with perspiration. Always allow lotions, antiperspirants, perfume, and other toiletries to dry before you get dressed. These products can contain ingredients that cause color loss or color changes in your garments.

How can I keep my garments looking like new?

Protect your garments from prolonged exposure to direct sunlight or strong artificial lights. This too can affect the color in your items.

How can I keep my garments safe when in storage?

Before putting clothes away for storage, have them cleaned to remove stains first. This prevents insects from causing holes in the fabric, and stains from ageing and discoloring.

Is it safe to mix colors and whites when washing on cold?

Clean all matching pieces together. Whether your work surroundings call for appropriate casual or traditional attire, we know that how you look does matter. That’s one of the reasons we work hard for you and all that you wear.
